1 sierpnia 1944 r., po pięciu latach niemieckiej okupacji, wybuchło Powstanie Warszawskie.
Niemcy z całą bezwzględnością przystąpili do jego tłumienia.
W tym rejonie znajdowała się jedna z redut powstańczych — Szpital św. Jana Bożego, zamykający Niemcom dostęp do Starego Miasta od strony Dworca Gdańskiego.
Mimo wyraźnego oznakowania symbolem Czerwonego Krzyża, szpital przez cały sierpień był bombardowany z powietrza i ostrzeliwany przez artylerię niemiecką, w wyniku czego został doszczętnie zniszczony.
Zginęło około 300 osób, w tym ranni, pacjenci chorzy psychicznie i wielu członków personelu medycznego.

From the very beginning, the Germans spared no effort to crush it.
This area is where St. John of God Hospital was located, an Insurgent redoubt that cut the Germans off from accessing the Old Town from the Warszawa Gdańska railway station.
Although clearly marked with the red cross symbol, the building was bombed from the air and shelled by the Germans throughout August, which resulted in its complete destruction.
About 300 people were killed, including mentally ill patients and the wounded, as well as many of the hospital’s medical staff.
